Open your driver’s door and look at the frame where it latches. There is a sticker there, usually white or silver, printed with a tire size, a pressure number, and some weight figures. Most people never read it. When it is time to replace tires, it is the most useful label on your vehicle.

We have been fitting tires as a trusted tire shop in Champaign, IL since 1984, and the conversation almost always opens the same way: the customer knows the tires are worn but not what the vehicle calls for. The information is not hidden, it is just written in a code nobody explains. Walk through it once and you will be able to read your own door jamb and sidewall, whether you drive in from Urbana, Savoy, Mahomet, or Rantoul.

Start With the Sticker, Not the Sidewall

That label is the Tire and Loading Information placard. It carries the tire size your vehicle was engineered around, the cold inflation pressure it expects, and the combined weight of occupants and cargo it can carry. Michelin notes these specifications live in three places: the door jamb placard, the owner’s manual, and the tire sidewall.

The order matters. The placard and manual tell you what the vehicle was designed for. The sidewall tells you what somebody put on it. On a used vehicle, those two often disagree.

We see it constantly with cars bought secondhand near the University of Illinois campus. A student picks up a reliable sedan with four matching tires and assumes the size is right, but a previous owner may have gone up a size for looks or down for a fast pre-sale replacement. That sidewall just repeats somebody else’s decision.

  • If the placard is unreadable, the owner’s manual has the same figures, and we can look up the factory spec by year, make, model, and trim.
  • If your current tires do not match the placard, tell us. Not a problem, just information we need.

Tire Size Meaning: Decoding the Code on Your Sidewall

Take a common example: P235/65R17 103H. Every character does a job.

  • P identifies it as a passenger-car tire. An LT prefix instead means light truck, used on heavy-duty trucks with stiffer construction for heavier loads.
  • 235 is the cross-section width in millimeters.
  • 65 is the aspect ratio: sidewall height is 65 percent of that 235mm width. Lower means a shorter, stiffer sidewall.
  • R means radial-ply construction, which nearly every modern passenger tire uses.
  • 17 is the wheel diameter in inches, the one number that has to match your wheels exactly.
  • 103H is the service description, two separate specs glued together: 103 is the load index, H is the speed rating.

That last pair is where the real decisions get made, so we will take each on its own.

One bonus read: the DOT number’s last four digits are a date code. Consumer Reports gives the example of 0424, a tire built in the fourth week of 2024. Rubber ages whether you drive on it or not.

Load Index: The Number You Never Go Below

The load index is a coded number for how much weight one tire can carry at full inflation. It is per tire, not per vehicle. Published charts map the codes to pounds:

  • 91 = 1,356 pounds
  • 95 = 1,521 pounds
  • 100 = 1,764 pounds
  • 103 = 1,929 pounds
  • 110 = 2,337 pounds

Michelin’s guidance here is blunt, and we agree: a tire’s load rating must always meet or exceed the value the vehicle manufacturer specified. Fitting a lower load index than the factory called for can lead to sidewall failure, blowouts, and loss of vehicle control.

What makes this dangerous is that it is invisible. A tire one load index below the placard is the right width and diameter and looks identical mounted. Nothing in a walk-around catches it. The shortfall shows up the day the vehicle is fully loaded and running warm on the highway, which is a bad day to find out.

The stakes rise anytime the vehicle carries weight. If you tow a trailer for a small business in Savoy, load a pickup every morning, or send a packed family van down I-74, load index is not a spec to negotiate. You can go up. Never go down.

Load Index and Speed Rating: Heat, Not Permission to Speed

Speed rating is the most misread mark on a tire, because the name sounds like a license. It is not one. What it describes is how much sustained heat the tire’s construction can shed. The common range:

  • L = 75 mph, M = 81 mph, P = 93 mph
  • R = 106 mph, T = 118 mph, H = 130 mph
  • V = 149 mph, W = 168 mph, Y = 186 mph

The lettering is not strictly alphabetical, which trips people up. Z sits before W and Y because Z-rated tires originally covered everything above 149 mph, and W and Y were added later as vehicles got faster.

Nobody in Champaign County is legally driving 130 mph. Illinois law caps speed at 70 miles per hour on interstate highways outside an urban district and 55 miles per hour on all other highways, roads, and streets. So why does the letter matter?

Because heat builds up over time, not only at peak speed. A vehicle running I-57 toward Chicago or I-74 toward Bloomington holds a steady 70 for an hour at a stretch, in July, possibly loaded. That is a different thermal workload than a car circling Urbana surface streets at 30 to 55 mph. Michelin’s position on speed rating matches its position on load: replacement tires should meet or exceed the specified rating, because a lower-rated tire is not built to manage sustained heat.

There is a real trade-off going the other way. According to BFGoodrich, speed ratings also reflect ride comfort, wear, and cornering ability: typically the higher the rating, the better the grip and stopping power but the lower the tread life. You can raise the rating, but you cannot lower it without effectively lowering your vehicle’s safe top speed to match.

So going up a rating usually buys grip and costs miles. Which side of that trade suits you depends on your commute, which is exactly the kind of thing worth talking through with a local tire shop before you commit.

Matching the Tire to How You Actually Drive in Champaign County

Once size, load index, and speed rating are settled, one choice is left: the category of tire. You can shop for tires by size or vehicle as soon as you know which numbers to enter. The useful way to decide is not browsing tread patterns. It is describing your week honestly.

  • Mostly short trips and stop-and-go. Campus-area driving, school runs, errands around Urbana. Long tread life and a quiet ride matter more here than cornering grip, because the tire rarely gets loaded hard or heated up.
  • Serious highway mileage. Regular I-57 or I-74 miles are the sustained-heat case, where speed rating and construction earn their keep. A touring tire built for steady-state highway work fits.
  • Hauling and towing. Work trucks, trailers, and loaded vans need load index headroom first. Truck and SUV tires use stiffer construction for that duty.

Winter in Champaign: M+S Versus the Snowflake

Two winter markings show up on sidewalls, and they do not mean the same thing.

M+S stands for Mud and Snow, the baseline all-season marking based on tread design.

The three-peak mountain snowflake, or 3PMSF, is a higher bar. It means the tire meets U.S. Tire Manufacturer Association requirements for severe snow and provides traction on medium-packed snow. According to Les Schwab, the designation has been in use since 1999, and a 3PMSF tire outperforms an all-season carrying only the M+S mark, partly thanks to a compound that stays pliable in the cold.

The compound point is what matters locally. Champaign-Urbana averages 23.2 inches of snowfall a year, with an average January high of 32.9 degrees and an average low of 16.7 degrees. Not mountain-pass conditions, but we spend whole weeks below freezing, and cold rubber loses grip on dry pavement too, not just on snow. Local winters also swing hard: record seasonal snowfall here was 67.2 inches in 1977-78 against just 6.7 inches in 1953-54, so planning for the average is optimistic. Tires belong on your winter readiness checklist right alongside the battery and wipers.

Tread depth interacts with all of it. NHTSA’s analysis of national crash causation data found that among tires with 0 to 2/32 inch of tread left, about 26 percent were on vehicles that had tire problems in the pre-crash phase, versus about 8 percent in the 3/32 to 4/32 inch range. Worn tread becomes a winter problem long before it becomes a legal one.

Plus-Sizing: What Changes When You Go Bigger

Plus-sizing means moving to a larger wheel while keeping overall tire diameter roughly the same. Plus One steps the wheel up an inch, adds 10mm of width, and drops the aspect ratio 10 points. Plus Two goes two inches larger. Either way the sidewall gets shorter, which sharpens handling response and looks more aggressive.

The constraint is overall diameter. Stay within 3 percent of the original equipment diameter. Drift outside it and three things happen:

  • Your speedometer stops telling the truth. At 3 percent larger than original, it reads 60 mph while the vehicle is actually doing 63.3 mph. Larger diameter means fewer revolutions per mile, so the cluster under-reports and the odometer under-counts the same way.
  • Driver aids get bad data. ABS and traction control work off wheel speed. When diameter changes exceed 3 percent, those systems can misread normal rotation as slip or spin.
  • Ride quality changes. A shorter sidewall has less rubber to absorb a pothole, a daily comfort cost on rough county pavement, not a theoretical one.

None of this makes plus-sizing wrong. It makes it a decision worth taking deliberately, not by eye. Bring us the wheel and tire combination you are considering, and we will check the diameter math before anything is mounted and put together a quote for the setup that clears your vehicle.

Do Not Skip the Placard Pressure

While the door is open, note the inflation pressure on the placard. That is the number to set, cold, before the vehicle has been driven. It is not the maximum pressure molded into the sidewall, which is a limit for the tire in isolation, not a recommendation for your vehicle.

This one has hard data behind it. NHTSA’s review of crash causation survey data found that among tires underinflated by more than 25 percent of the recommended pressure, roughly 10 percent were on vehicles that had tire problems in the pre-crash phase, against 3.4 percent of correctly inflated tires. At 25 percent or more underinflated, tires were three times as likely to be cited as a critical event before a crash.

Pressure also protects the set you just bought. Even correctly rated tires wear unevenly and run hot when low, erasing mileage you already paid for. Regular tire rotation matters for the same reason.
