It’s one of the most common questions we hear at our counter here in Champaign, and it usually shows up with a little suspicion attached. Somebody picks up a nail on the way in from Savoy or Mahomet, we measure the other three tires, and then we say the thing nobody wants to hear: you might need more than one.

So let’s take the sales pitch out of it and walk through how the decision actually gets made. Whether you replace one tire or all four isn’t shop policy. It comes down to two measurable things, and once you know them you can do most of the math yourself.

The Two Questions That Decide One, Two, or All Four

Question one: what drives the wheels? A front-wheel-drive commuter car, a rear-drive pickup, and an all-wheel-drive crossover each tolerate mismatched tires differently. All-wheel drive is the fussy one, and we’ll get to why.

Question two: how much tread is left on the tires you’re keeping? A brand-new tire is deeper than what’s already on your car. The size of that gap, measured in 32nds of an inch, is the number that answers the question.

That’s really it. And none of it comes up until we’ve settled the question that comes first, which is whether the damaged tire can be repaired instead of replaced.

How Tread Depth Is Actually Measured

Tread depth gets measured in 32nds of an inch. A new passenger tire usually starts somewhere around 10/32 to 11/32, and it wears down from there.

The right tool is a tread depth gauge, which drops a probe into a groove and reads the depth off a scale. We measure every tire in three spots across the face, inside, middle and outside, then check a few points around the circumference. A tire worn unevenly across its width is telling you something about alignment or inflation, and it can rule out replacing just one tire even when the average depth looks fine.

The at-home version: AAA describes checking depth with a quarter turned upside down in a tread groove. If you can see all of Washington’s head, you’re already shopping.

One technical note worth knowing, because Illinois wrote it into the statute: groove depth isn’t measured where a tie bar, a tread wear indicator, a hump or a fillet sits. Those are raised features molded into the tread, and measuring on one gives you a shallower reading than the tire really has.

What Illinois Says, and Why 2/32 Is Not a Target

Illinois sets two different numbers, and most drivers have only ever heard about one of them.

Operating a tire: under the Illinois Vehicle Code, a tire is unsafe for highway use once the depth of tread groove drops below 2/32 of an inch. On a motorcycle or truckster, that figure is 1/32.

Selling a tire: the same section separately prohibits selling, leasing, or offering for sale or lease any pneumatic tire for highway use with a tread groove depth of less than 3/32 of an inch. The state’s floor for a tire being legally sellable sits deeper than its floor for a tire being legally drivable.

Here’s why both matter. Drivers tend to treat 2/32 as a target to coast down to, and the braking data says that’s a bad plan. AAA, testing with the Automobile Club of Southern California’s Automotive Research Center, found that tires worn to 4/32 of an inch, still legal by a comfortable margin, added 87 feet of average wet stopping distance from 60 mph for a passenger car and 86 feet for a light truck compared with new tires. That’s a 43 percent increase.

Picture it on a rain-slick stretch of I-74 or Neil Street. At the moment the car on new tires had come to a complete stop, the car on 4/32 tires was still doing roughly 40 mph.

Handling gets worse too. In the same testing, tires at 4/32 cut handling ability by an average of 33 percent for the passenger car and 28 percent for the light truck. AAA’s advice is to replace tires once tread reaches 4/32, and Nokian Tyres recommends much the same.

So the practical replacement point sits well above the legal one. That isn’t upselling. It’s stopping distance.

Front-Wheel Drive: When Two Is Fine, and Where They Go

On a front-wheel-drive or rear-wheel-drive vehicle, there’s no center differential trying to reconcile front and rear wheel speeds. That gives you room to buy in pairs, which is what most drivers in this spot end up doing.

The rule we work from is to match by axle. Two tires of the same make, model, size and depth on the same axle keeps the side-to-side behavior even under braking and through a corner. Matching also means matching the specification your vehicle was built around, which is the size, load index and speed rating printed on your door jamb sticker.

Now the part that surprises almost everybody: the new pair belongs on the rear.

Nokian Tyres instructs that when tires are replaced in pairs, the new tires go on the rear axle and the partially worn tires move from the rear to the front. The reasoning is about what happens when grip runs out. Deeper tread on the rear resists hydroplaning better, and if the rear tires do let go on a wet road, you get side-to-side sliding that’s genuinely hard to correct. If the fronts lose grip first, the car pushes wide, and most drivers can manage that by easing off the throttle. Oversteer is harder to control than understeer, so you engineer for the safer failure.

We get pushback on this one all the time, usually from front-drive owners who point out that the front tires steer, drive and do most of the braking, so they should get the new rubber. It also puts your worst tires at the end of the car you have the least control over.

AWD Tire Replacement Rules: Why Tread Depth Mismatch Is the Deciding Number

All-wheel drive changes the conversation, and this is where AWD tire replacement rules get strict. Given how many Subarus, RAV4s and CR-Vs we see around Champaign County, it’s the version of this question we field most often.

An AWD system spends its whole life comparing how fast each wheel is turning and splitting power accordingly. A tire with deeper tread has a slightly larger rolling circumference, so it turns fewer times to cover the same ground. Put a new tire next to worn ones and the drivetrain sees a speed difference that never resolves. Parts built to absorb brief differences through a turn end up absorbing a constant one instead.

So how much tire tread depth mismatch is too much? Published guidance on AWD replacement puts commonly specified tolerances at roughly 2/32 to 4/32 of an inch of tread depth difference, depending on the system. Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive gets described as the strictest, at about a quarter inch of rolling circumference difference, which works out near 2/32 of tread. Systems like Audi quattro, BMW xDrive and Volkswagen 4Motion are cited closer to 4/32.

Treat those as ballpark, not gospel. Your owner’s manual is the authority for your specific vehicle, and we’ll check it, or the manufacturer service information, before recommending anything on an AWD vehicle. The spread between the loosest and strictest systems is wide enough that guessing isn’t good enough.

The Decision Ladder by Remaining Tread

Here’s the ladder we actually walk down once the tires are measured. The published guidance lines up closely with how we’ve handled it here for years.

  • Survivors close to new, roughly 8/32 to 9/32 remaining. The gap to a new tire is about 2/32 or less, inside every tolerance in common use. One tire is usually the honest answer.
  • Survivors in the middle, roughly 4/32 to 7/32. Buying a pair for the same axle is the sounder route, and on an AWD vehicle, shaving the new tires to match may be better still. A single new tire here can land outside the tolerance on its own.
  • Survivors at or below about 4/32, or wearing unevenly against each other. A full set is the honest recommendation, and the drivetrain repair a big mismatch can cause costs far more than the tires you skipped. If cost is what you’re weighing, ask us for a current quote on both options and compare them side by side.

Two examples from around here. A University of Illinois staffer picks up a sidewall puncture on I-74 with three tires still measuring 9/32. That’s a one-tire day, full stop. A family crossover comes in two Champaign winters into its tires at 5/32, where a single new tire would sit roughly 5/32 deeper than everything else, outside even the loosest published tolerance. Same damage, different answers, entirely because of the tread on the tires nobody hurt.

Shave to Match: The Option Most Drivers Never Hear About

Tire shaving is exactly what it sounds like. A new tire gets machined down to a shallower depth so it matches the partially worn tires you’re keeping, holding the tread profile and the relative depths the tire was molded with.

If you own an AWD vehicle staring down a full set because of one ruined tire, this is worth asking about. A shaved tire also matches the traction and handling of the worn tires better than a full-depth new one would.

The trade-off is tread life. A tire shaved from 10/32 to 6/32 gives up roughly 4/32 of the life it was sold with. You’re buying a new tire and throwing part of it away on purpose. Whether that beats four new tires depends on your vehicle and how worn the survivors are, and we’re glad to quote both routes so you can compare them.

Before You Buy, Check the Warranty You Already Paid For

Plenty of drivers replace a damaged tire without ever checking whether something already covers part of it.

Road hazard coverage applies to damage from things outside anyone’s control, the potholes, nails, glass and debris that finish a tire off early. Treadwear coverage is about the tire not lasting as long as promised. Those are different things, and a tire can be eligible under one and not the other.

Adjustments are typically prorated off remaining tread. Falken’s terms, as one published example, credit a treadwear claim as measured depth minus 2/32, divided by original depth minus 2/32. An 11/32 tire worn to 6/32 lands around 44 percent of the credit. Their terms also decline tread life claims when 5/32 or more remains.

The paperwork is what trips people up. Claims generally require the completed warranty pamphlet plus tire rotation service records, or invoices showing the mileage at each rotation. Skipped rotations can cost you the claim, which is one more argument for staying on top of your rotations. Bring whatever documentation you have and we’ll look at it before we write anything up.

Why Tread Mismatch Matters More in Champaign County

Mismatched tread is a wet-weather problem first, and Champaign-Urbana gets plenty of wet weather. The Illinois State Climatologist puts our averages at 41.38 inches of precipitation and 23.2 inches of snowfall a year on the 1981 to 2010 normals.

Rain through the spring, slush and refreeze in January, and a lot of flat, fast county highway between here and Rantoul, Urbana and Monticello. Those are exactly the conditions where the deeper tire belongs on the rear, and where 43 percent longer wet stopping distances stop being an abstraction.

The habit that keeps your options open: rotate on schedule and keep your pressures right. Tires that wear evenly as a set stay close enough in depth that one damaged tire can be answered with one new tire. Tires allowed to drift apart force the more expensive answer later.
